Discharge of security

Having redeemed my mortgage with nationwide they have sent me the title deeds and all assorted paperwork. As I live in Scotland they have told me I must engage a solicitor to obtain a discharge of security. I have been told by my solicitor to bring in the land and charge certificates and they will act for me.They have quoted a fee of £306 for this service,does this sound about right or should I shop around. Is it possible to contact the Scottish land registry and obtain this discharge of security myself.

Shop around (especially if that doesn't include VAT and the Land Register's fee). In theory you can do it yourself but the learning curve in drafting the deed etc probably doesn't make it worthwhile.

Or you can just leave it until you sell (or mortgage) the property, you don't need to get it done immediately.

Thank David I will definatly shop around. I may even get back in touch with nationwide and see if they have an in house service. I have no intention of selling, so probably better getting this sorted now.I wouldn't want to leave any problems for my daughters once I am gone. Lol
