In my day job now I'm starting to deal with clients who have been educated under the Student Loan scheme and the repayment calculations mean that it doesnt have a huge effect on their income. I'm quite comfortable with a scheme where those wanting a Degree level education have to make a contribution towards the costs. Even for what they do pay it is only that - a contribution. God knows what the ACTUAL cost of a degree would be but substantially more I'm sure.
They'll be paying 9% on anything over 21k or
9% on anything over 17k for the rest of their lives in all probability. Fair effect on earnings IMO.0 -
I don’t have a problem with the salary paid to staff at Queens. I am sure it is the going rate and if the academics there can attract that salary then good for them. If we want our students to be educated to a high standard and equipped with the skills necessary to drag Northern Ireland away from its dependency on the public sector then we have to pay the going rate to get top academics to teach our students.
There is little point in reducing Corporation Tax to attract new industries to come here if we don’t have the skilled work force to work in these companies. We need joined up Government here so that Departments such as DEL and ETI talk to each other rather than one Department trying to attract inward investment and another Department cutting funds so that we don’t have people with the necessary education and skills to take up the jobs that will be created.
It is easier for our lot to continue to fund several teaching Colleges here churning out teachers with no jobs for them at the end.Val0 -

Don't knock the greens, I'm a fan. They have a few great ideas, removing the rates cap and getting rid of 30 MLA to name but a few.0 -

I agree that we need a well educated work force to grow the economy but that's only if the people actually stay here.... which most of our best don't !! So having a "Free" education systems for those who just then pack up their bags and leave is a massive loss to our economy and our pockets...0
