to try and put perspective on to this,
most recent data is for the 2013-14 year shows 11,261 council homes were sold in England
by comparison, social homes added by development is running at a higher rate
so on average we are building more social homes than selling them0 -

They also help in areas where there is an imbalance between property prices and local wages, such as in rural North Dorset where a friend of mine wouldn't have been able to move out of her parents' house without a rare 1 bed council maisonette being available (most houses round there are the type on Escape To The Country, only affordable to those downsizing from London). We've had council houses for decades now in this country, and I think most would agree they are A Good Thing.
The point about Right To Buy is that none of the capital released has resulted in like for like replacement of social housing.
So what matters is the form of tenancy, not who owns or manages the properties?I think....0 -

Given rtb is such a terrible thing I assume in the labour manifesto it states very clearly that it will be rescinded as soon as they take power?
It is in Wales under the labour led assembly.0 -
Exactly...........and at a time when the population is growing and housing is out of reach for so many. It's purely short term thinking for electoral gain.
but that is clearly not true
about 15k social homes were sold in 2013-14 about 3k were built by councils
but private developers need to build social homes too, in some cases 50% of private developments need to be social homes. I checked last night and in my council 48% of ALL NEW HOMES BUILT last year were social
What that means is, if new builds are running at ~130k a year and if say 35% of them are social that is 45k social homes added by private developers
So its currently running at about 3x
for each social house sold, there are about 3x as many built
The SOCIAL HOUSING STOCK is not shrinking but IS GROWING0 -
This is a £15bn giveaway to people who happen to have secure housing in a housing association property. Very unfair to people in private rented accommodation.
Still who will notice in amongst all the other unfunded promises.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

When I read this it just serves to instil in me a sense of wonder at how mystifyingly out of touch the Tories are. Their two main feel good announcements this week are a massive tax break for millionaires and another state funded hand out for council tenants. Meanwhile 15 million normal working people trapped in private rentals, literally screaming now for an end to the housing crisis, get nothing whatsoever.
But then this is a Cabinet composed of people, not one of whom could tell any of the others what it feels like to not be able to pay a bill, or what its like to have to spend what you earn and not have some infinite hand out waiting at the end of your parents phone line. This is a government formed of people who think a low six figure income is near poverty, people on benefits are sub humans who will never achieve anything, and middle earners are serfs whose existence is to pay 30% tax on their ever diminishing incomes.
I just hope the electorate bands together and gives them the absolute stuffing they so deserve at the ballot box. If you are privately renting and you vote Conservative you deserve everything you get. In my opinion.0 -
They're not real social housing though, are they? They're 'affordable housing' which contains all sorts of stupid schemes, including shared ownership .
no that is not true,
a developer needs to sell at a price to the council or a HA where that council or HA can rent it out at social rents and cover costs
the landlords of such homes are social landlords just the same as when the councils transfered their stock to HA (social landlords)0 -

They reckon they will make £4.5 B a year from the sale of more expensive council homes. Of which they will allocate £1B to more council building on brownfield
also Boris of house tory as the London mayor set the housing portion of development as social to 50%0
