I've checked the salt dispenser and it seems that the lid wasn't done up very tightly. I've done another cycle and there is definetely an improvement. Might not need to invest in new cutlery after all!

I had this problem a while back and thought it was the ASDA dishwasher salt that had ruined all my new M&S cutlery.

They sent it off for testing etc and the experts basically told me that it wasn't the salt, but using too much washing detergent that can cause this.

I now use the 4 in one tablets or Fairy liquid tablet thingies and I don't have the problem.

The problem seems to be solved!! No more rust spots since altering the rate that the salt is dispensed. I use Aldi's 4 in one tablets, and they do the job fine.
For what its worth, I also use Aldi's washing tablets in my white wash, and their liquid in my coloured wash---can't fault it, so why pay more?

  • Hi, I've just bought a Bosch dishwasher (never had a dishwasher before so new to all this) and I've noticed that my cutlery is coming out with spots of rust on it. The cutlery is also brand new and it looks awful already.

I thought I'd post here because you all seem to be experts on solving household problems! Could it be something to do with the salt? I know salt can cause rustyness. Or is it likely to be a fault with the dishwasher?

    Thank you :o

I get the same problem with our dishwasher sometimes, the rust spots do rub off with a scourer pad, I dont know what causes it though.

  • Yes i did fill the salt thingy with dishwasher salt as instructed but also think the tablets are all-in-one so think this may be aggravating the problem - if it is salt-related.

I could maybe wait until the salt runs out and then not top it up anymore and just ignore the low-salt warning light on the dishwasher!

sorry removed my first post as it was wrong, apparently you do need salt in the softener as well , but not rinse aid

the salt in multi tabs is not enough

Seeing that the cutlery is brand new, could it be a problem with that?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

This is what I originally thought but it is also happening on items such as my pizza cutter and sharp kitchen knives - basically anything metallic.
