PDLs & mortgage applications

I am in the very early stages of apply for a shared ownership mortgage on a property.

Up until about 18 months ago I was struggling on a very low income and regularly used payday loans. The most recent (2 years ago) defaulted and it took me a year to pay it off (now settled). I came to my senses and swore off PDLs for life. I now have a full time job and (due to various factors) live with a relative. my financial circumstances have significantly improved.

I have accessed my credit file through equifax, it wasn't as awful as I expected, but then it dawned on me there was no evidence of PDLs on it. I've since learned (from MSE) that wonga doesn't appear on equifax files, but that doesn't necessarily mean lenders won't see it.

I appreciate the reasons that lenders avoid people with PDL history, I'm now worried sick that this will completely ruin my chances. I'm 30 this year and need to sort my life out for me and my daughter. I have a couple of small debts that are being repaid. I feel like my chances are slim to none.

Is there any way round this? How do I prove that my finances and my approach to them has completely and utterly changed? Or is the PDL stain on my credit file going to ruin it for me regardless?
Thanks in advance.

Time does heal so be patient. Settle your other debts. Then start building a deposit.
  • Do you think it will be necessary to wait until they are not longer on credit file? That's 3 to 4 years I may not have.

I'm on a bit of a time limit in my current "home" and if I end up in private rental again I will be throwing all my savings away.

    Sorry that sounds abit dramatic!
