Hi.

Sorry if this is the wrong place posted on the motoring thread but didn't get much help.

So I have a car from carcraft I got 2.5 years ago. The finance is with moneyway and I've always made the payments. I have spoke to them about handing it back and clearing the finance. I can do this as I've now made half the payments and this will clear my finance and ill also be debt free and I have a car lined up that I will be buying cash.!

I was wondering as they said someone would come out to inspect it before taking it back. What I'm not sure about is what there looking for. There's no major dents or scratches just stone chips from general wear and tear. Are these sort of things going to be a problem. And also if I wanted to go through with this would they then bill me for repairing those sort of things or is this something they agree with me on the inspection?

  • When handing a car back at the half way stage, the vehicle has to be in a reasonable state given it's age and mileage.

The best way to protect yourself is to take plenty of photographs of the car before you hand it back, and then you have evidence of its condition should the HP company try it on - as some evidently do.

The car doesn't have to have been regularly serviced, etc.

It's had its servicing and I've had timing belts done etc like the general up keep of the car is good. It's clean and tidy but close up has stone chips. There aren't any major defects just general wear and tear. It's a 58 reg car with 67k miles on it.

I'll take your advice and take a lot of photos etc.

    Thanks for the reply :)

Be prepared to stand your ground on this, some companies see this as an opportunity to stiff their customers and will try to rip you off. Don't let them do this and make sure that you know exactly what they intend to charge you for, if anything, before you hand them back the car. If there is work to be done it will almost certainly be cheaper to get it done yourself rather than let them do it as they will charge top whack for doing it!

Couldn't agree more, also how much MOT does the car have left on it? A long MOT is also further proof that the car has been tested and fit for use

Take a LOT of photos of the car from every angle the day that they pick it up. This way you will have evidence of the car's condition and will be able to refute any claims for damage that was not there at the point of handing the car back.

They will stuff you what ever you do as they have a contract to fall back on that is several thousand words in length.

Is the car value at auction more than what you owe as some auctions will sell and clear finance and pay the remainder.

Have you checked the finance agreement? My sister thought she had HP but it turned out to be a personal loan.
