Whenever I go on the market, I buy from a fruit and veg stall and I ask them if I may take some cabbage leaves for the rabbit. they always say yes and I am allowed to collect from their bin.
Yesterday, in the top of their (big) bin, with NOTHING thrown on top of them, was a box of 6 caulis.
DD was with me and asked me not to take them, so I didn't - not least because she wouldn't have eaten them.
had she not been there I would probably have taken 2 (and left the others for another person to find).
Would other moneysavers have picked them up?

As it seemed so unusual to find them just sitting there boxed nicely, I'd have asked if there was anything wrong with them, just to check. Assuming there were no issues I would take them. I might have had a fit of generosity and offered the stall holder 10p each if I was planning on eating them myself (my cat doesn't eat cauliflower) but each to their own!***Mortgage Free Oct 2018 - Debt Free again (after detour) June 2022***

I would probably have checked with the stall holder, if they were being thrown out I would have taken a couple - and eaten them!0

Good grief yes! what does DD imagine they were grown in? at some stage fertiliser would have been used! they would have been washed and cooked - I wouldn't have used them raw because of where they were found.0

Yes, of course! I would have checked with the stallholder first, just to be sure they hadn't been accidentally left there by a doolally assistant (it happens!) but I would certainly have taken a couple. To be fair, the stallholders actually put stuff aside for me at our market; anything that's unsightly so won't sell, but is still very usable; we are very well fed, and so are my chickens - and my neighbours too, if there's more than we can use. In return, the stallholders have a very loyal customer who buys 90% of the food for 6 people there every week, at full price, & will recommend them to anyone who asks.Angie - GC Sept 25: £405.15/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

I'd have checked with the stallholder, too, 1) because I always go to the same market stall, and am on good terms with the guys that run it and 2) because I'd have needed help to retrieve them from the bin.;)If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

I'd have taken one and probably offered them a token sum towards it (hoping it would be refused - but to show willing) and, if it was too big for me, then turning round and offering half of it to some other customer (having done that before now with one I paid for - as all of them were the same size - so I just took a huge one and had the stallholder cut it in half and gave it to the customer behind me).
Alternatively, taken the lot and then given the extra ones away - to save the wastage.0 -
I would definitely have asked. Surely they must have been contaminated in some way. Why would he throw a bid of good cauliflowers out?Member #14 of SKI-ers club

On a Saturday, in particular, they seem to throw a few things away, rather than take them back.
The other week there were sprouts (on stems) and limes...
DD wasn't with me the week I found them:rotfl: I asked if I could have the sprouts for the rabbit. The rabbit got some. The sprout stems ended up with my friend's chickens.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
