I've not really looked into anything like this as I can see it very easily being a kitchen gadget that I will rarely use.
However can anyone answer any questions about them?
Such as what the ice-cream is like?
I'm looking for something that is soft, like Mr Softy / Mr Whippy as if it's anything else than that then I may as well buy ice-cream from the store.
Although I have thought about buying a proper machine from eBay...

I think you can get ones that do the 'Mr Whippee' style of soft ice cream but the majority have the more traditional texture.
I've got one where you freeze the bowl - the basic recipe gives a result similar to one of the more upmarket vanilla's.
As Cisci001 suggests, the benefit is really in both knowing exactly what's gone into it (no additives or preservatives) and in being able to make flavours that you can't easily buy (our current favourites are Cherry, Turkish delight and Maple Walnut). Too many of the ones available in supermarkets these days are both expensive and seem to have what are in my mind unnecessary bits in them - cookie dough, chocolate chunks, etc...0 -
Cuisinart do one that ive had my eye on for years, but shipping/tax from the US makes for very expensive Mr Whippy. I could buy hundreds from Mcds for the same price (and that includes a flake)0

Mine's a Cusinart one, from Debenhams, but doesn't produce the right texture for the OP

I've got an older version of this http://www.lakeland.co.uk/15912/Cuisinart%C2%AE-Gelato-and-Ice-Cream-Maker
Not Mr Whippy texture but like soft ice cream when eaten straight from machine. pop into the freezer for a while to get ice cream of normal hardness. If left in the freezer for more than a week it gets too hard though.
We make very nice creamy ice cream from the machine, better than all the cheap stuff in supermarkets that is made from powder skimmed milk , etc but then the cost of cream for the machine isn't cheap!0 -
i have one we purchased from Aldi for £15, its very good and easy to use. But it normally costs me around £3.50 to make 1 litre of ice cream. But i have made the kids all sorts of flavours that are difficult to buy, cherry, bubblegum, cola etc etc, plus it tastes a lot nicer. The novelty does wear off though! the modern day sodastream lolPlan: [STRIKE]Finish off paying the remainder of my debts[/STRIKE].

Start enjoying a stress debt free life.....now enjoying. thanks to all on MSE0 -
Rum n Raisin is my favourite, made with real rum. With half a cup (or more) of rum the ice cream stays quite soft. Baileys ice cream comes second.0
