I have the potential for a bonus every quarter

I'm going to phone OR on Monday but just wondered if anyone could give me any idea how this is generally dealt with.

I am currently BR and I have had the interview with my OR and agreed my allowance. I forgot to mention it at the time (although one of my payslips would have shown this) but there is a potential every couple of months for me to earn a bonus? It is hit and miss and I usually don't know till the week before its paid.

How are ad hoc, uncertain earnings usually handled?

My IPA was based on an average of my very variable earnings. Unfortunately nearly every month I have been above that average but over the period the IPA runs I expect that to drop down. For ad hoc amounts, and I've had a few too, I notified the OR once I had the money and unless I had a justified reason for keeping any of it, I had to hand it over. One time I was able to keep some for car repairs and had to send in copies of the receipts, and was allowed to keep only exactly what was on those receipts, down to the last penny. I was warned beforehand though that even with receipts, I might have to pay the full sum over and find the money for the repairs separately.

Your best bet would be to notify your OR as soon as you have the money, or at least within 21 days of receiving it, and unless you have a good reason to keep any of it, expect to pay it over.
