ssl capital

Over the last year or so I started to get my finances in control and grew up a little and took reponsibility for my past irresponsible lending. I checked through my credit history and got a list of all my lenders and cleared every single one either by full or partial settlement depending on the ammount and based on what I could afford.

I thought I was done but I've just received a letter from ssl capital for a debt for £650. I have emailed them and advised I budgeted for all my debts and paid them off but didn't know I had this one. I know it's my fault as I should know and not have to rely on credit reference agencies as I'm aware companies don't have to report to these.

Anyway they have said there's no option for partial settlement and I need to pay the amount in full despite the debt being originally for £350. Is this correct ?

Do you agree it is your debt?
Have they provided proof of the debt and a breakdown of the balance they claim is owed?

They have provided me the original agreement, which is for my bank account i used to have with halifax. It also shows my address, name, ammount etc so its all pretty legit from what i can see. I did go through a stage or silly borrowing around 2011-2012 which is when this is from which is also when i was diagnosed with MS and toook a bit of a bad turn going out all the time with money that wasnt mine.

I would say its for me im pretty certain it will be just need to know where i stand in terms of doing a partial settlement. They replied and said this is down to the company and its not something which SSL Capital do apparently.

No creditor is obliged to accept a partial settlement, and they often won't agree to.

It sounds like the debt is still owed by the original bank and that the debt collectors are just collecting on behalf of the bank.

If you are not in a position to pay in full then offer them a monthly amount you can afford. And if that is not a very high amount then it may be worth writing again in a few months to offer another partial settlement at that stage and you may get a different answer.

thanks, ill just have to go with the monthly option. my credit wont improve much anyway for a couple of years when these defaults drop off so no harm in doing it that way i suppose.

When you say they have said there is no option for partial settlement - have you only discussed this by phone? or have you tried writing to them with a full & final settlement offer?
