The Unions did represent a wide body of people and forced up wages for the majority of working people. Also economic growth was higher in the 60s and 70s so I'm not convinced they did the economy much harm overall.

Different era. The world has moved on since then.

I'm convinced that far from being their strongest, the economy is the Tories weakest card. Today we heard about what would be a disastrous policy of raising the threshold for IHT, which as the IFS has pointed out would drain investment away from other sectors, and discourage downsizing.

....As this HMT document argues (para 16, page 9) “there are not strong economic arguments for introducing an inheritance tax exemption specifically related to main residences”. The document lists a number of problems with the policy for example the fact that it would encourage investment in owner-occupied housing rather than other more productive investments and discourage downsizing late in life when that might otherwise be appropriate.

The Conservatives’ proposal would further complicate the IHT system....

Of course reducing taxes means you have to raise them elsewhere or create a fictitious money tree for the NHS.

George Osborne refuses to answer how Tories will fund £8bn NHS pledge 15 times in excruciating interview on The Andrew Marr Show

IHT has no connection to the problems that the UK faces in terms of the real economy. ;)
