Mobility Scooter

Hello
Looking to buy a mobility scooter for my 85 yr old dad, cash purchase, something that is good quality and reliable! Any advice or recommendations? He is not on DLA or any benefits so this shall be a pure hard earned cash purchase! Prefer to buy within a reasonable radius of Belfast! It shall be a brand new purchase not second hand!

Any advice really appreciated! Regards!:)

    Hi -

    We bought a second hand scooter from Fair Price Mobility and have had a great service and after sales from them. They sell new scooters as well.
    They are based outside Lisburn -
    Don't remember their telephone number but I'm sure you would find in the book/on-line

    I have bought several items, such as a wheel chair and riser / recliner chair from Lisclare in Belfast ;

    I don't have any experience on scooters, but I have always found the chap at Lisclare to be helpful. The shop is set back from the road in a small industrial estate and has good parking. Usually I can get parked right at the door.

    I would suggest to take him to Shopmobility to "test drive" some to see what suits him best. You can then shop around to make your purchase.
  • NAR is right. Definitely test drive as there are all sorts of sizes of scooter.

    My dad has one and we learnt that the bigger the man (like my dad), the sturdier the scooter he needs. Maybe even get one of the main motability scooter dealers to call to the house to advise? I'm pretty sure they brought a couple for dad to test drive.

    As for second hand, you'll know by looking at the scooter if it's been well treated. Test the levers to make sure it responds to both back and forward. Also find out if they have any additional battery packs added as if your dad intends to use it for longer journeys/in places with an incline the battery can run down quickly (especially if he carries any weight).

    Once you know the type you want, you could touch lucky on gumtree. Research is key as ultimately it's a big purchase and you won't want to buy the wrong thing. Hope all this helps!
