That's sick pay not pension. Ill health pension is immediate payment of accrued pension ie naff-all for the op (1/60th of salary) plus some extra years if they are unable to work at all rather than just not teach.

Yes you are correct in what you say about sick pay - although I was answering in respect of the OP who asked about needing income protection plan as I was assuming(perhaps wrongly)she meant short term illness. I should have worded it better.

Ill-health pension through not being able to teach is extremely difficult to get as they often turn you down just in case there is a chance, however small, that you may be able to teach in the future.

    • do i need a income protection plan? (for when i become ill and cannot work? i'm assume the government will help me out)
    • Do i need a policy which pays out lump sum if i cannot work? or die?......
these are just Insurance policies.......do you think you 'need' to Insure yourself against these 'risks'

Personally speaking I think Life Insurance is good value...but many other forms of Insurance are not...

I wouldn't insure my car if it wasn't obligatory.......I've never insured my household contents and after 28 years of owning my own house I have saved a pretty penny.

It's up to you whether or not you pass the risk onto an Insurance company or take that risk yourself !!!!

You state 'when'you become Ill and cannot work........if you think that it is that certain that this event will happen then maybe you should pass the risk onto someone else...........if you think the risk is only IF... then maybe you should carry that risk yourself
