BBQ for 50th Birthday Party

Hi guys,
Mr Lema is 50 this year and to celebrate I have talked him into having a party and he said it would have to be a bbq.
I am starting to prepare now as i have spare cash - I have got burgers and sausages in the freezer and will get chicken drumsticks also, however, to pad it out I am going to make a chilli and thinking of a veggi curry. I will go a big bowl of salad and also shredded lettuce and sliced toms on the side for the burgers. Would you do a bowl of rice also?
deserts will be two large gatteaus, pile of profiteroles and of course a large birthday cake
Does this sound ok?

Exactly what I done for my 50th last year
I did do rice. Cooked and cooled, and nuked as required although many people didn't bother, they just piled the hot curry and chilli on top. I have an induction hob so it's very easy to leave things on to keep warm for a long time
I also done big bowls of pasta salad, potato salad and coleslaw. No one went hungry and we had left overs for a few days0 -
Rice would work well with the chilli and veg curry. How about doing some pesto pasta or cous cous to accompany the bbq meat and salad? Both are cheap and can easily be prepared well in advance.
Jacket potatoes may also be a nice idea as these would go well with the chilli, veg curry and equally well with the bbq food. These could be cooked in the oven in advance and then kept warm on the bbq if you have space.0 -
If you have vegetarians, may as well get a few articles & freeze them in advance too. We've found 'sausages' cook from frozen fine, so extras can remain in the freezer.
+1 for a vat of pasta - if you worry it's not going down, mention it's presence to a teenage male & wait... Drop an extra bottle of ketchup within reach if feeling kindly.
Above all, (amidst having a smashing 50th party & congratulations!), lay in on food you'll happily eat cold for the next week.0 -
Thanks you lovelies for your replies
I have 4 large bowls so will fill em up with pasta salad, rice, salad and something else. I will get a huge vat of coleslaw from costco and keep it in its box. Only be around 30 people so won't over do it. Going to have tom sauce, mayo, onion relish and chilli sauce oh and cheese slices. Hubby will get the beers in when they go on offer i.e 3 cased for £20 or the like.Lucylema x :j0 -
Hi
With pasta salad I've used the pasta sauces cold as a dressing and they've worked well. I like the ones with the olives in so chucked in a few extra olives & chopped pepper for more texture.
With chicken pieces you can poach them gently in a stock to cook them & then put them in the marinade. Put them on the bbq & they do crisp up but means you're not worrying about cooking them through to the middle.
Cheers

I prefer chicken pieces on a skewer rather than chicken drumsticks. I love BBQ food!!0

hmmmm, just one suggestion as the menu sounds lovely - a real BBQ dessert is 'Bananas'. you can use the cheaper YS bananas here (in fact they are better) and just blacken the bananas in their skins after the meats have been cooked. open them to pure gorgeousness! a squirt or dollop of cream or sprinkling of Demarara sugar - its my favourite BBQ dessert.0
