Hello everyone

I hope someone can give me some advice.

I had a few debts in the UK, credit cards, overdraft, and mobile phone contracts etc, amounting to approximately £8000. I was self-employed in the UK but work was not always stable, but I had kept on top of my debts and had nothing more than a few late payments.

Anyway, a job offer came up abroad, which seemed to good to be true! Long story short, the job did not pan out and I have struggled since to find any other employment for the last few months. Of course this has meant that I have been unable to keep up with the payments in the UK. I would have happily serviced these debts, but I ended up with no means to as I only had enough to cover accommodation and food expenses. I certainly didn't expect to be in this position, so I wasn't running away from my debts as if I was working I would have easily been able to keep covering the re-payments. I have now not been in touch with my creditors for several months so I have no idea what has happened, Yes, probably not the best course of action, but sometimes pretending it isn't happening is the only way to deal with it.

Anyway, I'm now applying for jobs back in the UK hoping I can return with a job to come to.

What do I do? How do I find out what has happened to my debts? I'm sure I won't be in a position to pay them off in full so will have to arrange some kind of payment plan? I'm terrified and feel like I am stuck, if I return I will have no means of paying anything without employment, and if (like I'm assuming) my credit file is ruined, I won't even be able to get a rental?

If any can help with how I deal with all this, I would appreciate it.

Thank you x

Write to each 1 asking for an up to date balance.

You will be able to get a place to live even if its just renting a room, got any friends who could let you stay.

Register with the CRA's and see what is registered on your credit file.

Morning, well done for posting, best thing you could have done.

Next best course of action is to speak to one of the Debt charities and find out what your options are, they will have experience of your circumstances and will be able to advise you. Stepchange is who I do my Debt Management Olan through and they were brilliant but any free advice centre will be the same...DO NOT PAY FOR THIS ADVICE, YOU DONT NEED TO!
Get together any paperwork you have and set up an account with Noddle, this is a free way of checking your credit report and will mean you have a better idea of where you stand.

Lastly keep applying for jobs, you are doing a fantastic job of getting back on your feet after an unfortunate blip, I'm sure you will be successful...keep us updated, loads of people on here will help with ideas and support.

    Good luck!

i would think the best course of action would be to get in contact with all your creditors, be honest and tell them the what has happened, and find out exactly who you owe what to, and explain that you want to pay these debts off.

Once you have done that you need to work out how to pay them off, either by setting up a DMP or arranging a plan with your creidtors.
Plan: [STRIKE]Finish off paying the remainder of my debts[/STRIKE].
[STRIKE]Save up for that rainy day[/STRIKE].
Start enjoying a stress debt free life.....now enjoying. thanks to all on MSE
  • Thank you everyone, your replies are appreciated.

It isn't a nice place to be right now, I was hoping this 'new life' would be a great adventure but by being able to pay off my debts, I would be able to return to the UK in the future if needed, instead it just feels like I cant go back, yet I can't stay here much longer either :(

Thank you for your suggestions, and Murphy I will try Noddle, I've never heard of it, thank you.

of course you can come back. You didn't kill anyone and at the end of the day they simply can't have what you haven't got.

Remember there is NO debt situation that cannot be resolved!
    £1000 Emergency fund No90 £1000/1000
    LBM 28/1/15 total debt - [STRIKE]£23,410[/STRIKE] 24/3/16 total debt - £7,298
    !
  • Thanks Andy, there are worse 'crimes' than debt, I must remember that :)

Hi Murphy, It wont let me use Noddle as its not accepting my bank card, I don't suppose any other will work either. It said it either cannot verify card details or not on the electoral roll, which I'm not as I informed them I was leaving. I will have to pluck up the courage to approach each lender, although the majority is with one lender, a high street bank.

    Hi Sourcrates

It isn't six years so my debts won't be statute barred? if that's the correct term. I've only been gone a little over a year and half.

ETA: I havent paid anything for about a year now.
