When to stop paying CS

I know that you stop paying CS when CB stops being payed,or at least I believe thats the case, someone tell me if Im wrong,my question is this, for various reasons I dont speak to either the child or her mother,so how will I know when/if CB stops being paid ? Im happy to pay my way,but I have been told by the CSA that if the child gets a job straight after school, and carries on in full time work (but still claims CB) then it will be upto me to reclaim 3 years of payments from the mother! (Like she would pay up with no fuss ha) So how can I find out when my responsibility stops in this situation ?

Ask the CSA to to a CB check. Takes them just a few minutes.
  • Ah right,so that something you can do just by phoning then ? Didnt know that. Thanks shoe*diva79

If the child is in work and not in education the mother cannot claim CB.

Yes, they have direct access to the CB interface and can check if CB is still being paid. I suggest you call them every 2-3 months to check if you are unsure if your child is in education.
  • Great, thankyou ;) Surprised its so easy, thought they would throw out the usual hurdles,or "data protection" my way... and

Topcat1982,re your comment, this can be gotten round though if the parent lies ? Although,I accept thats a whole different story and tangent but just asking ?
  • So for arguments sake, you ring up and they say yup,CB has stopped.Does your payment stop there and then (CSA payment) or is there a wait till September,or whatever ?

Your payment will stop from the date child benefit stops. So if it stopped on 2nd Feb 2015 as an example and you have overpaid, you will get a refund.

In a technical sense, you're wrong.

You stop paying (ie, accruing liability for) child support from the date that a CSA officer decides that your case must be cancelled. If you haven't been told that your case is cancelled, it... er... isn't cancelled.
