I've just made rice pudding with risotto rice and worked out very well. No need for rice pudding rice for rice pudding .

And it doesn't matter how old it is, either! My uncle made some rice pud with 17+ year old rice this week.....the mind boggles as to why he has had it so long, but he said the pudding was great and he's still here to tell the tale

Any absorbent short-grained rice will work. Arboreo (ie. risotto) rice is a particularly absorbent short-grained rice.

Risotto and pudding rice are generic descriptions, and are seldom used outside the UK.
