.. If you would have simply used the account without notifying them - the account wouldn't have been closed . Although it is possible if they receive a manual feed from CRA they would have closed it later date.

I don't think any Basic accounts would be available to you. You have 2 choices open up a Savings account or http://www.money.co.uk/current-accounts/bank-accounts-for-bankrupts.htm

You may try to open up a Savings account which offers a debit card - Yorkshire Bank does but not sure if they will offer account with BY. You can also try State Bank of India - They offer Debit Mastercard.

StarM - any regular reader of this board or poster with BR experience might take issue with your post as it is far from accurate.

Barclays will open basic accounts for BR's - the Co-op will leave existing basic accounts open or open one post AD but these are the only High St. BR tolerant banks. Lloyds would have closed the OP's account anyway. Savings accounts (except Credit Unions and Yorkshire BS) would also be refused.

For the OP - don't waste your breath on Lloyds - they won't give you a straight answer anyway. Just get down to Barclays and open a couple of basic accounts with them.
  • How will Barclays react being creditors in my BR? I owe them about £6K

It appears...there should be no problem..especially if you open the account immediately after the Petition is granted?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

From what others have posted, it should be fine. They seem to (often) refuse before BR if they were a creditor but once the BR has been granted they normally open basic accounts without any problem.
    SPC 8 (2015) #485 TOTAL: £334.65
    SPC 9 (2016) #485 TOTAL £84
    SPC 10 (2017) # 485 TOTAL: £464.80
    SPC 11 (2018) #485

I have long believed - although have no evidence - that Barclays and the co-op had some sort of 'deal' with the IS to provide basic accounts for BR's even if they were a creditor. If BR's can't get an account then the OR risks the BR not being able to work (what payroll pays cash these days?) and the OR's system for collecting IPA's etc wouldn't work would it.

Some large employers like the NHS and large cities have credit unions big enough to offer bank accounts, they are an excellent and available choice for BR's if there is one near you?

  • I find it very odd that people's experience differs so much. I was worried about my account with Lloyds after bankruptcy and called them and had no issues and continued using the account and still do. They weren't interested in the bankruptcy at all. I guess it depends who you speak to!!

Great that it worked out for you, but you are an unusual exception to a very common rule. :)

It does not depend on who you talk to, Lloyds official stance is very clear on BR`s, you have just been very lucky and slipped through the net, it does happen from time to time.

I meant who you speak to in the call centre, obviously the person I spoke to either didn't know or wasn't interested in doing the work. I have no idea what their official stance in on BR, I'm just glad I slipped through :)
