aviva endowment

Hi had my maturity value as shown in previous thread. Not being that financial literate . How can I confirm that over the last 25 years aviva has acted on my best behalf and returned to me the best returns . Say one year my pot of cash grew by 2% or 6 % how do I know I got the best return for me . Do I get 90 % of the growth that year . Not sure if I have made it clear but who independently checks . Or do I just trust aviva to do the best on my behalf and they give me the best return.

You cant. However, each year your policy was in existence they published accounts on the fund(s).

It is unlikely any insurance company fund would be the best as insurers dont normally push to be the best (as that typically means increasing the risk and becoming more volatile and it doesnt always pay off). They will get what they will get based on their opinion of what best fits within their remit.

If it a unit linked fund then you get whatever the fund gets minus an annual management charge. If its a with profits fund (or unitised with profits) you get a smoothed return which may not reflect the underlying fund but is calculated on an average basis with some held back for poorer years to attempt to smooth out the volatility. In more recent times, there has been less smoothing with the volatility reflected in the final/terminal bonus.

    Bottom line, yes you do.
