Why don't sellers answer emails?

On three occasions recently I've contacted sellers for a little more information on items I am interested in. Two business sellers and a private seller.

The former to enquire if they happened to stock a 'missing' size in the range sizes of something I was after - this is about £25. Neither bothered to respond, so I have ended up buying it from Amazon.com and even with shipping costs was considerably less than the ebay.uk price from these two sellers. As I prefer not to wait for orders I had been looking for a UK seller.

The latter item was a rather expensive coat asking a couple of questions regarding the length and chest measurements. No answer. It sold at auction for £3.38 with just 1 bidder. It could well have sold for far more if there had been 2 of us bidding.

Hey ho - just a (minor) rant:)

It is so annoying when people don't answer questions. I always answer when I see that I have a message. I've had it happen to me also and I just wonder if the seller is being a bit rude or if they actually don't notice that they have a message. I suppose, with some new sellers, they have still to get used to looking for messages so could be that also. :)

If you read the posts of some sellers on here, daring to ask a question results in you being blocked from bidding. I answer all questions, even when the information is in the listing and/or the answer is obvious.

I think you really have to consider do you want to buy from a seller who can not be bothered to reply to messages? If something goes wrong are they going to bother to reply then? Personally I'd do like you did and let someone else get a bargain but possibly a headache to get seller to deal with any problems.

I find that 99.9% of questions I am asked, the answer in the listing - probably your seller felt the same day.

Just today I had someone ask the price and postage costs of a BuyItNow item - all this was in the listing - personally speaking I think if someone is too bone idle to read a listing, they will be too bone idle to pay, so I block them. I may lose the odd sale, but I honestly doubt I do.

I do get quite a few 'how much is the postage to the US' type emails, when all my postage costs are clearly shown.

I can assure you that neither of the points raised by Soolin or BXboards applied in these 3 listings. In two of the cases I was asking if they happened to have one of the sizes they were missing in their range; in the third the coat was listed as 'medium' - as any woman knows 'medium' means little.

In 1 and 2 a simple 'sorry' we can't supply that size; in number 3 - well, who knows?

I always answer unless someone is being cheeky or rude, then they just go on the block list.
Would be nice to get a 'thank you' from the person enquiring even if they don't buy but that rarely happens!

Manners are alwsys nice, but often seem to be rare nowadays. I hate shouty, txt speak questions or 'how much u want for it, mate|?' - I'm afraid they go on the block list!

Seriously though, in my category I am known (and I am, I'm not boasting) one of the most knowledgeable sellers. But I'm not the cheapest, and I am undercut by drop-shipping or box shifter sellers who tend not to allow questions. I found I was answering quite specific questions, only to see my 'asker' going off to buy from the other sellers! So now I actually don't reply - it's better I get the knowledgeable buyers who don't need to ask, the less knowledgeable ones go to my competitor and as they don't answer, they get loads of returns that I avoided :)

There's no excuses for not answering questions, possibly if there's five minutes left on an item and you don't see the message until it's finished. Even then I would contact the buyer.

As for stupid questions, I always give the benefit of the doubt. A few years ago there was a glitch in the system where postage wasn't appearing for some buyers, so even the daftest question might have a reason behind it. There's also the possibility that the dumbest customer has plenty of money to spend, so being polite to them may have dividends:o
