Did you have an accountant ? I used to do the books and VAT for my ex when he was self employed but we still had an accountant to do the year end stuff.0

I have no wish to be particularly judgemental about this issue. I am simply explaining that HMRC will only go back 20 years when they believe that the mistakes made on the paperwork were deliberate rather than careless.

You may well be able to negotiate an arrangement to pay with the HMRC. Interest will, of course, continue to be charged on the unpaid balance. The rate will be 3% for 2015/16.0
