Big spectacle frames - Help, please!

Hi,

I need help, PLEEEEEASE!

I have a big head and getting spec frames that fit properly is a nightmare. I'm on a fixed income, so I need to keep the cost as low as possible.

I've tried the links provided on this site and a few more from google, but no joy without having a spare arm or leg.

I need at least 145mm total width up to about 150-155mm.

My distance PD is 70mm, reading PD is 65mm.

Both my present frames (NHS) are 140mm total width, which is too tight. Limited choice on NHS freebies, without spending daft money. The reading lens is 54mm and distance lens is 59mm. I would prefer to have at least 58mm for distance lenses.

I'd like some depth, particularly on the distance lenses, 35mm at the very least; preferably 40mm.

The only frames I've found are usually in America and seem flimsy and they want daft amounts for the frames and similar for coatings, but seem to have good prices on tints.

I'm getting a bit frustrated and rather narked, now.

Hope someone can offer a clue.

Thanks in advance.

M

From the top of my head I can think of some large width frames but they are not necessarily deep. The Cameo Walter and Victor are some big frames which are not too expensive and have nice longs arms too. They do have quite shallow lenses though so if you're needing varifocals they might not be suitable.
    59x20 with 150 arm length.

Having a quick look online these seem ideal - the "Fatheadz" range (no offence!)

    60x21 with 150 arms.
  • I only ever buy glasses from an independent optician. That way if they have a good dispensing optician on site they can advise on what frames are available and what suits. Yes you pay more but it's worth it.

what's your nose like? narrow or wide?

I wear a 59X17 frame, any bigger in the nose and it would never fit. I also have a big ball head because I'm on steroids and a PD of 70mm which is massive for a woman.

Have you tried frames with bowed arms instead of straight arms? I've had a lot of sucess bowing my own arms but I am an optom and can sit and play with my frames in my own time.

I'd recommend getting an opticians to let out your frame at the lug and bow them at the temple. Most designs are fine for this and anyone who works in the opticians should be able to do it.
