Clydesdale Bank Refund

The Mortgage that my wife and i had with the Clydesdale ran out in March and we re-mortgaged elsewhere. About 6 weeks later we received over £500 back from the Clydesdale paid straight into our account. 2 days later we received a 'final statement' from the Clydesdale (CB) stating that the account balance was zero.

about a month after this we received a letter from the CB asking for their money back. we ignored the letter thinking it system generated as we'd previosuly been informed that the account balance was 0. we received a follow up letter a week later.

following this i wrote back to the CB asking why they wanted the money back as according to our statement we owed them nothing. this letter was ignored, as have phone calls attempting to clarify the situation (standard response of - we'll look into it and call you back!). It has now been two months since my original letter, and 5 months since the original letter from the CB.

Does anyone have ANY advice at all about what i can do to resolve this. we've got the money in our account, luckily we haven't spent any of it but we would like to either spend it, or give it back to get rid of the temptation. the problem is, we can't seem to get a handle on what we should be doing with the cash!

Do you think that they owed you the money? Or do you believe it was a mistake ?

Assuming that you have written confirmation that you have a zero balance I'd be tempted to assume that the money is yours. If the clydesdale thought you had 500 quid that was theirs I'm sure they would be pestering the life out of you!
