I really like farmfoods for frozen veg, particularly spinach. Its very cheap in there and much more economical than the fresh stuff. I also liked those birds eye veg bags, but aldi do something similar much cheaper so I buy from there.

Farmfoods also do their own small bags of veg that you can cook in the microwave and Im sure they are 50p a pack.

At the moment leeks and parsnips are 29p in aldi, they also keep for ages (parsnips).

Carrots are also on this fortnights super 6 in aldi. I also buy bags of bananas YS, have got them in a few supermarkets, also got tons of plums last week for 10p a packet.

Something like a pineapple lasts me a few days where a tray of fresh berries obviously won't.

YS muchrooms peeled and sliced will freeze fine for casseroles also I buy onions when either Ys or on offer and will spend an hour or so peeling, slice, dicing and freezing them as they can be used straight from the freezer in the quantities needed for either frying or casseroles.I too waste nothing, probably why my freezer is always full of odds and ends Even left over short pastry is wrapped in clingfilm and frozen until I have enough to use it up in a pie or jam tarts

Sorry, no, it wasn't aimed at you, not sure why you would think it was.
It was to the OP - hence the further question about the pitted olives for £2.25.

If the OP and her girls are using lots of fruit & veg then that's a good thing and if I were her I'd be looking to find an alternative supply cheaper or cutting costs from her food in another way.

I must admit my veg/fruit list is very different to the OP's.
At this time of year it has lots of 'traditional' veg such as carrots, cauli, cabbage, leeks, turnips, swede, sprouts etc as we like proper dinners and stews/casseroles.
I also buy courgettes, peppers, mushrooms and aubergines.

In the summer it's traditional salad stuff.

I'm not that keen on fruit apart from melon, cherries, nectarines and apricots and they're not that great this time of year.

LOL, i think i was getting confused, i actually thought that you were the OP :rotfl:

it doesn't seem excessive if it all gets eaten . i buy 2 large bags of apples and broccoli and sweet potatoes ans asparagus every week and that's for my son who has then daily in his lunch box. for us i buy a punnet mushrooms peppers, sweet, potato courgettes, onions, carrots, cauli , turnip and potatoes, kiwi fruit. sometimes a celeriac or a squash. and can sometimes top up later in the week. nothing gets wasted as if it starts to look past its best i make soup

I spend around £25 to £30 per week, this is at Lidl so i do try to keep price down as low as possible. Lidl is better for keeping fresh than my nearest Aldi and is 7 less miles to drive there.

I am veggie but occassionally eat fish, OH and DS both eat a lot of fruit and veg. I tend to se veg to make meat etc go further. OH is not that keen on fruit so makes his into a breakfast smoothie with oats yoghurt and milk

I tend to buy the following:
    carrots
    cabbage/sprouts
    turnip
    potatoes
    parsnips/leeks - 1 pack tends to last a fortnight
    sweet potatoes
    trio lettuce
    baby plum tomatoes
    2 cucumbers
    sweet peppers
    spring onions
red and white onions - bag or each lasts 2 weeks
    garlic
    ginger
    chilli
    pears
    apples
    melon
    pineapple/mango
    3 punnets of grapes
    2 bags of frosen berries
    frozen peas
    frozen sweetcorn
    green beans
    jar of olives
    jar of beetroot
I never have any waste, know that I could cut back but I dont buy hardly any snacks or ready meals etc so it all balances out. I tend to spend around £50 to £60 on my weekly shop for the 3 of us
  • Mine was £13.08 this week for a family of 5, but I didn't have to buy any frozen veg, some things last a couple of weeks and I'd topped up a few bits in the week at the greengrocer stall we have at work. I bought....

    Bananas
    Apples
    cauliflower
    sprouts
    carrots
    spinach
    spring onions
    lettuce
    baby potatoes
    big potatoes
    mushrooms
    green beans
    cucumber
Chopped veg for soup (I was feeling lazy and it was on offer!)
    Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
    And now the final frame
    Love is a losing game

I think that is a very reasonable spend on fruit and veg, better spent on good fresh produce than junk. I have never actually counted up my fruit and veg spend. I usually buy every week.

    Lettuce x2
    cucumber
    cherry tomatoes
    large tomatoes
    celery
    red onions or spring onions
    3 pack peppers
    brocolli
    cabbage or sprouts
    kilo carrots
    12 apples
    12 bananas
    bag of satsumas
    plums or pears about 8
    grapes
    spinach

on top of this I regularly buy but not every week usually fortnightly
    cauliflower
    aubergine
    courgette
    mushrooms
    butternut squash
    sweet potato
    strawberries in season
    necartines in season
    apricots
    figs
    avacado
    sharon fruit
    leeks
    chillies
    swede / turnip

I buy a large sack of potatoes every month to 6 weeks and a large sack of onions

Frozen stuff that I buy regularly

    peas
    sweetcorn
    corn on cob
    green beans
leeks when I can get them
    roasting parsnips
    mixed veg

I think I might keep track the next few weeks to see how much I spend this is for a family of 2 adults and 1 teenage boy and one 10 year old boy

Last nights fruit and veg part of my weekly shop for 2 adults and 1 child was £17.80 and I will have to buy a few more things on Saturday.

I'm an Aldi shopper, and I find the quality great for the price.

I will be starting planting my summer salad leaves and radishes soon though, which saves me money in the summer.

We always use a mix of fresh and frozen fruit and veg. I rarely buy tinned fruit (usually because it is canned in syrup).

    Cat.x

The choice of tinned fruit in juice is much better than it used to be. I buy things like pineapple, prunes, grapefruit in juice and they are quite good quality (not quite as good as fresh fruit, but cheaper - a can of prunes lasts me three breakfasts with muesli or porridge).

Canned veg, I only really buy pulses (red kidney, cannellini, chickpeas) and tomatoes.

Have recently started buying mixed frozen berries - you can put a small portion in a pot with natural yoghurt and take them to work - by lunchtime, they're thawed.

Don't like the texture of frozen veg, apart from peas, although I do freeze some leftovers like e.g. braised red cabbage. other leftovers I put into soup and freeze. We don't like waste in our house!
