i have lost my tfl oyster annual travel card however i bought a new one expecting that i can transfer the contents of my lost card to the new card. when i phoned up the oyster help line they said that because there is 10 months left they need to post out a new one. Why is this ? why cant i just go touch in at a station and have the remaining ten months transferred to my new oyster card as i now have to pay for about 5 days worth of day tickets which will cost approximately £50 when i have already paid for an annual ticket

I am not sure on this but I would think that as you still have a lot of "credit" on your lost card if it was just the case of buying a new one then touching in or whatever to transfer from one to the other anyone could find your card and do it causing you to loose all that money. By reporting your card lost or stolen your details being held by TFL are safely changed to the replacement card and sent to you.See link below from the website

If not, perhaps you could look upon that £50 as the cost of your carelessness.0
