Arranging Insurance before bankruptcy

Hi I am after some advice regarding insurance and bankruptcy. As you can see from previous threads we are planning for my husband to go bankrupt in July this year. My query is I need to arrange contents insurance in June and wonder if anybody can recommend some bankruptcy friendly insurance companies. Obviously when I apply my husband wont be, but I will need to let them know when he does that he is as dont want to find we are not insured.

Just after peoples advise who have gone bankrupt with insurance in place how they have got on when they contacted the insurance company. What difference it made to premiums and if it was only one of you, if you took out the policy in the non bankrupts name and just advised that there were two adults living in the property and the other person was the bankrupt.

Also wanted to pay the policy in full this year but dont want to do this if I find Im then not insured.

Thank you for any advice in advance.

Hi, my home insurance was with More th>n when I was declared bankrupt, I was the policy holder so I phoned them to let them know. They said it was ok and they would make a note that I had called, I made a note of the date and time of my call and the name of the adviser just in case they tried to say they were unaware if I had ever had to make a claim. They also let me carry on paying in instalments and sent me a renewal with a usual quote, I changed to the co op though so I don't know if they would have retracted it if I had phoned to remind them I was bankrupt.

My car insurance was with Hastings, they were also fine and just put a note on the system and let me carry on paying in instalments. Car insurance was trickier at renewal time because I could get instalments and had to pay up front but RAC were fine with me being bankrupt.

    Good luck with everything :)

Hi, I only have car insurance in my name & that was with Aviva. I phoned them to tell them & it wasn't a problem. At renewal they had just removed the option to pay in installments. The premiums didn't seem to increase because of the BR but I went with Churchill who were cheaper. They weren't bothered either.

Building & contents insurance are both in my Dad's name (his property) & the only one who refused at renewal were Saga. I can't remember who we are with now though. This was only last year. It wasn't difficult to find BR friendly insurers though.

Insurance company policies seem to change regularly.

I was/am still with, Co-op, for motor and contents insurance..and have had absolutely no issues whatsoever regarding monthly DDs, etc.

However, I recommend being wary of Co-op's admin procedures....they have consistently over the years of my custom, suffered from a left hand not knowing what a right hand has done, etc.

Paperwork details, reports to QUEUE [notification of claims, and fault/no fault], etc need thorough checking.....I have logged many hours on the phone to Co-op, rectifying their mistakes.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......
  • Thank you for the replies, has helped put my mind at rest that we will be able to have cover without it costing a fortune.
