Professional Trolling is just one of the several errant memes of the Internet there to catch the unwary.
The truth is that real people, more or less genuinely stating their personal views are behind the vast majority of forum posts.
It's a fascinating aspect of human nature/Internet etiquette that we prefer to suggest that someone with an opposing view (or a dumb view) is a paid troll, rather than calling it for what it is: they are simply an idiot, or they lack compassion, or whatever...
Professional Reputation Management is something rather different to trolling. Not that I am convinced that in the majority of cases it actually works, anyway.
I see your dessicated water company, and raise you McDonalds. One of the biggest companies in the World, hugely popular and yet they cannot stamp out the misinformation (or is it?) amongst keyboard warriors and green campaigners. Not that it is ultimately that damaging to them commercially, anyway.
Let's hope Grant Imohara (ex-Mythbuster) can save the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o6Hh6tQj2w0 -
I think the professional Troll would be there to stop a particular line of argument developing if it acts against their interests.
This isn't the same as presenting their view.
Professional trolling is cheap and it may just be effective. It's worth a go in my view. Just look at how much the political parties spend on voter analysis and targetting.
(
To help out this targetting, for the record I am an ardent
- Labour Voter
- Conservative Voter
- Lib Dem fan
- SNP fanatic
- UKIP baron
- Green Tree Hugger
... that should mostly cover it !

They do. I particularly like:- Nectar points on Income Tax payments.
- Compulsory recycling of election leaflets as toilet paper distributed to food banks.
- Relocate Parliament to Wormwood Scrubs to reduce travelling costs.
