    Define 'best'.

A recent thread: Accounts for Euro

Also, you can 'hold' euros in a prepaid card.

Best as in Best - that least charges for transactions, cards etc!

This will be a large one off deposit but then used on a fairly regular basis when we visit the continent

I have a French account with http://www.britline.com/ (customer service in English and my UK address on file). The basic account with a cheque book but without cards costs €0.60 per month, but cards cost €40 / year or so and there are various charges such as for using other banks' ATMs.

There were a couple of German banks offering free accounts to UK residents, but they appear to have stopped doing so now. I'm not aware of any free options.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Best and cheapest do not neccessarily go together but good luck in finding what you are looking for.
