just wondered if any MSEout there are subscribing to that knitting mag that came out a few months ago that gives you a ball of wool a month with the aim of knitting squares using various techniques that you are taught as you go along that will eventually get sewn together to make a shaker style blanket. i did and am getting a bit behind, well alot behind actually but was just wondering how well/badlyanyone else was getting along?

My mum and I started collecting this mag but realised that it would cost us a small fortune to make the final blanket so stopped. I searched Amazon and there are quite a few books that are devoted to knitting squares that looked excellent. Have now added a couple to my wish list. In the meantime I've started making my own using ideas from the blanket in the mag. Looking nice, too.

I bought the 1st one as a gift for a friend, but she couldn't follow the DVD, so still can't knit

Bought it, knitted the first square, then decided that it would be really expensive to carry on (and wouldn't use up my extensive wool stash - much to OHs annoyance!). I was tempted to subscribe though.
I found a book on Amazon, called something like '200 knitted blocks', which is enough to keep me occupied when I don't have anything else on my needles - although at the moment I've got two Christmas pressies on the go (a cardigan and a scarf), so quite busy!
I'd be interested to see how far others may have gone.

I bought the first one with the aim of getting the freebies. I cut out the cardboard example of the finished blanket & have proceeded to knit squares. My aim was to knit at least a square a week (my really knitting friend was horrified at such a low ambition.... trust me, it was the height of ambition for me.) I've know done only 16 squares, so its going to be a marathon. I try to copy the differnt styles on the picture. That Amazon book sounds as if it would help me get the variety I'm after though, so thanks for the pointer. The free needles are nice and smooth to use.
Do you think the magazine collection will start coming up on Car boots next summer?

I have a spare copy of the DVD if anyone needs it

how are you finding the different kind of wools look together, this was what put me off adding my own and going without book, the other reason i wanted to subscribe was to learn the other stitches and stuff as was pretty much self taught and although can do the basics cannot decrease when knitting in a pattern which stops me being able to just pick up a pattern and go for it. am getting bit disheartened now i have so many unopened issues. must get on with it soon :rolleyes:0 -
I did subscribe to it but didn't receive anything so cancelled the direct debit. They are now sending me narky letters asking for money. Still haven't received anything though.
Glad the subscription didn't happen though, it does seem an expensive way of knitting a blanket. I had all the good intentions of learning to knit but still haven't touched wool or needles.0 -
I subscribe to this, I think I have about 36 issues, and I've only knitted 5 squares
I'm getting the hang of it now, and am doing about 2-3 squares a week, slowly catching up :rotfl: I think it is worth the money, as I don't have anyone to show me how to knit so I'm learning something new each square I knit. Also you're getting loads of patterns per issue and hints when you get stuck. At the cost of roughly £12 per month I'm learning something I'm beginning to enjoy (I get a bit stressed when I can't do things though  ), and I cancelled my 2 other magazines I used to subscribe to - so money saving as well
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0 -

i am now on square 7 so slowly crawling along myself. no problems with stitches as yet as managed to teach myself the basics when alot younger. but like you am not just looking at it as a blanket kit as being self taught have limited knowledge and by what i have scanned so far it is a really good way of learning to make loads of useful things around the house as well as the blanket and does have some lovely jumper patterns. can only manage a basic jumper at present but hope this will open up whole new world. also seen it teaches crochet, another skill i only know how to do a blanket by going around in circles. but do have to get a move on with it as issues are backing up a bitbut glad to find someone else enjoying this publication too
