My mate owed Barclays £7,000 she opened up a basic bank 14 days before her court case. Funny enough the financial advisor when he set up the account saw this account highlighted in red and he sniggered at her but still the computer said yes.
9 days after her hearing the bank account was closed. The reply from Barclays was if you was open with us, we would have left the basic account open. But you said nothing and for that reason we don't want you as a customer.

Oh dear oh dear......much is lost in the telling, ie urban myth.
Firstly, one isn't actually bankrupt until the very second the Judge signs the petition.
5 minutes beforehand, one is not a bankrupt.
However, accounts that were defaulted, or 'in the red' will show up on the bank's systems.....
The main issue is, whether Barclays will take monies from a basic account opened pre-BR, as an offset.
What I have seen reported on here is....if Barclays were a creditor, then yes, they may close a basic account...but will open a new one the day after the BR petition!
I, personally, have had no problems whatsoever opening a Barclays basic account, post-BR. despite their being major major creditors...
Oh, BTW, the cashier isn't getting paid because the bank's CEO has made a major banking error, costing billions of Euros...and still wants his bonus.
Nothing to do with a customer petitioning for BR.
There is sage advice from this forum.....take it as you wish....after all, it is your financial problem.
Most of us have had zero issues with either Barclays or Co-op...providing the ground rules have been followed. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

You could apply this to any financial relationship. Being open and honest creates a trust between the parties. Break this bond and there's nothing left.0 -
Applied for the Santander basic account and was accepted. Santander were also a creditor in my BR. Wonder if Santander are the first non-BR friendly bank allowing Ex BR's access to a bank account in prep for the government changes that all banks should give people access to bank accounts?0

This is why people are advised to open the account after going BR. I did as others advised, went in to the branch, saw a PB, told them my situation, the application had to be done manually otherwise it would have been rejected straight away, had to wait a few days for approval which I got and still have the account nearly 6 years later.:pB&SC No. 298
