  • Thank you for all your comments. I will have a long think about it. But if I do take out the loan, I will be paying it back regardless of my wages. This would be a great career choice for me and my family.

Bit harsh! I don't think there's any intention to avoid paying back, simply as another poster has said that the wages for that particular job are shockingly poor.
    It's heavily, heavily implied.
I don't need to pay anything back until I earn over £21k. The career I am taking will not take me over this amount at all, even on a full time basis, it is term time only on a pro-rata basis. I have also been told the loan will be written off after 30 years.
(even though I am never going to earn over the threshold)

(just remind me, how much are tuition fees in Scotland?)
They're not free for a career change, which is what the OP is doing - and I myself did eight years ago, self-funding my Honours degree and teaching qualification.

Is it actually possible to earn £21,000 as a term-time only teaching assistant?

I wouldn't have thought so anywhere in the UK - it's certainly not the case up here in Scotland.

  • Well I wasn't expecting to get such a harsh remarks from Gaz83. You don't know me and for your information my hubby and I have decided to fund the course ourselves. I was asking for advice, not a lecture. As I have already said, I am not entitled or claim any benefits, we only have one wage and I want to return to work ASAP. Money is very tight with only one wage, I was looking at an opportunity of having a little assistance without dipping into our small savings.

    But hey, you know best.

Good for you, glad you had the funds to do that.
  • I would take the loan why pay when you don't have to.
Nothing to see here, move along.
