Student Finance Situation Help Please

Student finance have been in contact regarding extra evidence that they require for my brothers application. They are asking for either a letter from a solicitor declaring marital status or a decree nisi. This is to show that my mother is single. My mum and dad have been separated for well over 11 years. They are not divorced, they simply stopped living together and that's that.

How do I obtain this evidence? and how much will it cost us can parents get Legal Aid as both are on benefits?

If you can get the student loan company to provide the template of an appropriate affidavit then a commissioner of oaths or a solicitor will charge under £10 to validate it as given.

If they need to write the affidavit then its probably fairly simple so £100-£150.

If they want any form of actual investigations rather than just an affidavit then it could get expensive.

Legal Aid rules vary depending on where in the UK you are.

When I was applying I remember student finance on their Facebook page stating that a council tax bill showing the 25% discount was suffficient. I dont know if thats still the case you can ask them through Facebook, they answer pretty quick.

I got a letter from a solicitor, it was literally 2 lines stating the fact and signed. He was nice and didn't charge me. Out of curiosity though if both parents are on benefits wouldn't it be easier to just submit both parents finances? Wouldn't they still be well below the threshold?

i was asked to provide a solicitors letter OR a council tax bill with 25% discount on to prove i was divorced.

Ring them, they are very helpful but they will require evidence of some sort.
