But the PUK code is available from various websites for a fee of £25.

Not necessarily the right PUK code :)
    sourcrates wrote: »
PUK codes are not exclusive to network providers.

There are ways to unlock it, but that doesnt mean the provider is going to like it or put up with it. At the very least, they'll hit the OP with default notices.

I ran an orange phone for many years (iphone) using a same network PAYG sim, where the contract had been defaulted, and they never blocked the phone, still havent now, still using it.

Good for you. You fell through the cracks, but your experience is not universal and as a one time employee of O2, I can tell you that blacklisting IMEIs was quite normal.

    Hello
I am helping my friend. She is a single mum on in work benefits. Recently she was let down by her business partner and her income dropped dramatically. She took a 24 month contract with EE for I phone 6. something that they advertised it would cost £40 a months turned out to be £70 as there were no much on the contract to use for free.
Anyway she had to take a low paid job and can hardly cover her essential expenses at the moment. The partner also left a debt on her name with e-bay for £300 and £500 with the bank.
I want to introduce her to Step Change to manage her debts. I wonder if she cancels the contract and include the cancelation fee debt with her debt management plan, would she be able to use the phone with another network or sell it to pay some stuff off.
I tried searching net, but could not find a clear answer.
Many thanks for your help and time

Could always get her to use this service OP, does cost a little, but claims to unbar blacklisted phones :

  • Thank you very much for your replies. I am gonna check the contract and how she bought it. Her English is not very good - it does not help. Many thanks to everyone.
  • If she is running up bills on data, then it's very simple to not go over - EE sends you a text telling you it's run out. No apps requiring mobile data/internet pages etc will work unless of course, connected to wifi. You have to purchase the extra data. You can't do it accidentally.

I have also used a defaulted contract phone for over 2 years the debt still hasn't been paid and only the SIM was cut off, I even managed to get Orange to unlock it to all networks cause I was such a good "PAYG Customer"
  • £70 is very high, i pay less than that for 3 EE contracts, all have unlimited minutes and text, 1x 5gb data and 2x 5bg data on a shared plan.

I guess if you want the latest iPhone it costs a little more.

I cant see how she is using too much data, EE cap it, once its used, its used = no unexpected data bills (well in the UK, outside the UK you are screwed as we found out one year on holiday)

As others have said, i think she needs to find out WHY her bill is that high, who is she calling outside of her "free minutes" - is she sending photo messages (use whats app etc for free)

That, is a very good point corf, how indeed does one get into a contract buying from a second hand site ?

Unless she bought from one of the sponsored links, but most contracts come with unlimited data and calls, texts etc

    Dosent quiet add up.
