Cycling clothes not lycra

Apologies if this has been done before, can't get the search working. I've started cycling to work over a reasonable distance (15 miles each way) and think I need some more suitable clothing. Has anyone got any suggestions of brands that are good for cycling but font don't make me look like I'm cycling the tour de France?

What you want is fabrics that wick moisture away (avoid cotton). Outdoor clothes are good - they tend to have stretch and are wicking. You won't feel sweaty and if it rains they dry fast.

For long weekend rides I am in lycra, but for the commute I wear hiking trousers that have some lycra in for stretch, and base layers (t-shirts in a lightweight, high wicking fabric).

The leggings and t-shirts I wear for longer rides are actually 'designed' for running. I don't have any specific cycling clothing because I don't like padded shorts!

In short, any sports/outdoor clothing will be comfier than normal casual clothes, if that's what you're currently wearing.

Alternatively have a look at mountain biking clothing. It'll be designed to be comfortable when cycling but isn't lycra.
  • Maybe try Sports Direct as they have the Muddy Fox brand or Decathlon? Both are sensibly priced for non Lycra?

If you're doing 30 miles everyday, you should really think about getting some padded lycra shorts (even bib shorts). They're so much more practical and comfortable in the long term.

You can take a look at mountain bike shorts, which have a padded inner and baggy outer, but I don't find them as comfortable.

Tops don't matter so much. Anything sporty/wicking.

Padded under-shorts for comfort, a base-layer to keep you warm and dry, and a jersey made of synthetic fabric (so it doesn't absorb sweat) should help a lot.

There are some good wind-stopping jackets that don't look too much like fancy-dress.

And the stuff designed for mountain-bike riders is usually looser-fitting and more "casual" looking.

I bought my mum a reflective lightweight coat from primark that she lives in for cycling. I think it's intended for running but she says it's great. I found her some great cycling stuff in aldi too, especially the winter cycling gloves that she loves. I'd check aldi to see if they have any cycling stuff coming in.

My brother has a road bike so he does a lot of miles, he finds bargains on eBay and has gotten some really good branded stuff, some was brand new and others weren't worn much so he just washed them then wore them.

Eta didn't notice poster above sorry, I second aldi!
