General Comping Questions

Hi all,

I'm a returning member to the forum, my last significant activity was some time last year when I was new to comping.

I loved entering competitions during my run of entering them(which probably lasted a good 3 months). I entered A LOT, and would spend hours a day doing so.

Click to wins, the What's on TV-tyle comps where you can share on Facebook etc. to get more entries, the one-off competitions, there was a wide range.

I started to become discouraged about a month and a half in, as I hadn't won anything. It's all down to luck though, or whatever "force" it may be that determines these things, and you win some, and you lose some! (Or in my case you just lose them all)

I decided to do a test - there was a competition on What's on TV, for a mop(worth no more than £50). They were giving away 50 of the things. I thought I would be cunning and test out my theory - "who's going to enter to win a mop?" I thought. Let's enter this as many times as I can before the end date and I should be almost guaranteed to get one, or have a very high chance of getting one.

So I entered the mop comp. A lot of times. I visited every variation of the What's on TV site that was hosting the mop comp and entered, and shared on Twitter and Facebook. The Twitter spehere was awash with announcents that I had just entered to win a mop.

Then I waited after the end date......the mop didn't arrive :(.

I think I am probably the only person ever who was disappointed not to win a competition for a mop.

After that I continued for a couple of weeks....but then gave up.

It was unfortunate, as I do like entering comps, but maybe I am just not meant to win them. A relative of mine buys the Lottery £1 scratchcards, and he has had A LOT of wins. Whenever I've bought them I hardly win anything.

Anyway, now I'm back.

I started a couple of weeks ago on the magazine puzzle entries, and now i'm on to the Click to Win prizes. I enter specifically the electronic prizes as I love technology, and make sure to enter on every site that the comps are posted on.

I also enter a few that I see just for the sake of it, they're Click to Wins, they're not much effort :D.

I did start to wonder if anyone wins the Click to Wins, or that they're there just to drive traffic and generate ad revenue. However after looking at the I won I won I won section I have seen that some people have received prizes from them.

I was a bit concerned when i was able to enter the IPhone 6 competition multiple times on one website today(I entered it once, got the usual message about entering tomorrow etc., but when i revisited the website later, it prompted me to enter again after entering a different competition, and it let me enter without saying that I already entered).

Anyhow, I'll keep it up and see how I go.

Any extra advice would be fantastic. Should I diversify and not solely enter the Click to Wins? My thinking was that spending more time on multiple entry comps would be my best shot, but maybe this isn't true.

(PS Thanks to all who post the comps on here, and the answers with them :D!)

I would rather have one entry into 1,000 different competitions than 1,000 entries into just one.

(The rules only allow you 1 entry per day per site with the click to wins so your additional entries may count/may not count/could invalidate all your entries)

(The mop "sharing" probably didn't get you any extra entries for the Mop prize they just let you enter more different draws before reaching the daily limit when they had one.)

As to who would enter for a mop, 350-450 people enter daily for one 4 pack of AA Batteries, sometimes 1,000 tweets for a jar of marmite and One £25 Homebargins voucher FB----over 18,000 likes in one hour

That is some incredibly useful information, thank you mjm :).

I had it in mind that I had 3 entries per day for the mops on each site, how wrong I was!! Your explanation makes a lot more sense.

And thank you for the general advice :T

Remember, comping is a hobby - winning is a bonus
comping is not a get rich quick scheme
some people may enter every single competition for years and not win anything, others may enter 1 and win it - it is just the luck of the draw

It doesn't help when once a month the newsletter gets sent out saying comping is an easy way to boost your income -- trust me, it isn't
Yes, I know there is no "R" in the word dream in my username - it was setup in memory of my grandson :A

Oh of course :)! It is enjoyable knowing the entries are going in, but when the wins didn't come through after 3 months of trying the enjoyment stopped for me.

After a break I'm ready to perservere again ;)
