kidmugsy, yes whilst of course many of my clients are claiming benefits ... others are working full time at minimum wage, struggling to make ends meet, yet still have to pay into the pot.

Then you owe a vote of thanks to the coalition government for increasing the personal allowance against income tax.

I guess I feel I sense of duty to pay into our health, social care & education healthcare systems to help those that are worse off than me.

So do I. Unfortunately much of the money is frittered away on people who don't deserve it, and the people who live off them. I hate to see, for instance, how poorly we look after the insane and mentally deficient while splurging on families that choose to be unemployed for generations.

I also feel that as I have been to University and now earn a decent wage as a result, then it is only fair that I pay my loan back.

I sympathise with you on that; the fault lies in the design of the loans system, which goes back to (?) Blair's government. So you can't reasonably expect it to have been well designed. You might reasonably have hoped that the coalition would have improved it though.
Free the dunston one next time too.

Thanks, some useful comments. I realise there is no legal issue here so perhaps I just need to mind my own business lol!

You are asking the question on a moneysaving forum so the answers will be biased in favour of saving money. Ask your question on a religious/social welfare forum and you will probably get answers biased more towards what you express in your opening post.

Surely your clients on Min wage will be taken out of income tax entirely with the new PA?

...There might I suppose exist a form of government called a "moralocracy".
Apparently there isn't. At least not according to the interwebs.

There is however such a thing as a kakistocracy, and this is probably what we have currently (and have had for some time).

The major failing was a government encouraging people to incur debt for the sake of having a headline figure of 50% of students going to university to get worthless degrees or dropout anyway. Yet another Labour failing in order to massage unemployment figures, and another cost adding to the annual deficit legacy. :(

Odd, but your side appear to have had no problem with previous government policy on this given they have merely evolved it slightly. Do you see everything in terms of the reds vs. the blues?

My friend told me that she pays 80% of her wages into her pension scheme. She is able to do this as her husband earns enough so that they are able to comfortably live off his wage alone.
As she now 'earns' less that the threshold, she does not have to pay taxes or pay back her 20k+ student loan. The intention is that she will reach eventually reach retirement and the debt will be written off. My issue is that why should she not have to pay her way whilst the rest of the country have to? As a social worker I work with some of the most vulnerable people who are struggling to get by. Why should they sub my friend so that she can go on expensive holidays and enjoy an early retirement?
What do other people think? Is this ethically wrong or am I just being fussy?
I don't see a dilemma. You may think it is ethically wrong but there is nothing you can do about it because it is legal. I guess you could tell her your opinion but that's not much of a dilemma.

If her pension ends up significant, she will end up paying tax on it when she retires, if that helps.
