Which sum for SIPP purposes

Guy can I confirm that the sum I use for my higher rate SIPP contributions for 2014/2015 is my end of year total NI earnings or total taxable pay??

I think your 'relevant earnings' are taxable pay + personal allowance0 -
so on my pay advice for year end I have 2 figures £50.690.64 and another figure Taxable pay £45.105.60. Am I righ in thinking I can contribute £8825.64 (difference between high rate tax £41865 and my top end pay £50690.54)0

I'd be interested to know why there is such a diference between the two figures - taxable pay and the £50.7k.
