Dental retainer replacement.

My daughter's retainers got chewed by the dog.
It's £131 to get new ones.
I've just seen them for £50 on eBay. They send a putty to take an impression & they send you back the retainer.
Has anyone got any experience with these or suggest anything else?
Thanks for your help

Seriously? Can I suggest you pay the £131, you have no idea what she would be putting in her mouth... and suggest she keeps it in her mouth or a storage box instead of lying around for the dog to chew. Valuable lesson learnt!"You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

Wow that is steep, I have a retainer and was told it would be £20 for each one / £40 a pair. That is NHS though, are you private?Mortgage Free Wannabe Light Bulb Moment (Early 2012, started May 2012)

Is this an after-treatment-has-finished retainer or a removable applicance?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

Could it not be a similar situation to branded items & own label items? Usually made in the same factory.
I take it you've never made a mistake and/or broken anything.
Thank you for your opinion though.0 -

Hi, we haven't paid for the treatment, so it is NHS treatment. But I guess the practice is private & perhaps does a quote of NHS. It might be worth phoning them to see if there is another option.
£40/pair sounds better and probably similar to the one on eBay, if you added £10 for two lots of postage.
Thanks for the help0 -

Hi, yes this is after braces treatment. She's only had them about 6 weeks....
Thanks0 -
This is the correct nhs charge http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/DentalServices/2792.aspx
You can only claim the charge back if you can prove you took good care of them. However leaving them around for the dog to chew is not taking good care.
If the retainers are not absolutely perfectly fitting then the teeth will move and your daughter will have had the braces in vain. Are you confident you can take an accurate impression, are you sure it will reach the lab in good condition, are you sure you know how to check and adjust the fit properly?
You can try asking your dentist if they could make the retainers privately cheaper0 -

Hi, thanks for that. Funnily enough I just stumbled across that page.0 -

I have indeed made mistakes/broken things I just can't believe someone would risk their childs health in these circumstances and consider ordering such an item from Ebay. If that offends you so be it."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
for whats its worth and I do not mean to sound patronising .. but you wont be able to take a good impression first time. and you wonbt be able to recognise what you have got wrong either. It took me AGES to become competent at taking impressions and I still get things wrong requiring re takes despite over 10 years of practice and 5 years training. You are asking for trouble using an e bay type system and the orthodontist will NOT guarantee their work. Plus there are many different types of retainer so you probably wont even get the one you need.0
