I can't for the life of me tell the difference between these two TVs and also, I can't find reference to the B model anywhere outside Sainsburys!
Can any of you help me tell the difference? (apart from the name)
LG 42UB820V <- Available from many places nationwide
and
LG 42UB820B <- Only seen in Sainsburys instore

A lot of retailers have their own model numbers, especially if they do a price promise.
"Ahh no that's a different model madam, look at the model number"0

I assume the Sainsburys one is considerably cheaper? Often the "one store only" versions are missing a few bells & whistles. Not as many inputs/outputs, less adjustments on the menus, that sort of thing.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

I think you're both right. I imagine it's an easy way to avoid a price promise. I searched everywhere and can't find the B model, not even on LG's site.0

As mentioned its a marketing gimmick.../ store only deal... all models will share some common parts in the series ...others as stated will have subtle differences such as number of hdmi or audio connectors ....remember a lot of modern tv's now have a multi adapter cable that plugs in the side usually for component video ...this can alsi denote model letter difference!!!!0

'Best Price - Guaranteed! If you see the same model for less anywhere on the planet, by any means whatever, we'll give you 10x the difference and a solid gold helicopter!'
These claims become a lot easier to make if you have an exclusive model number . .
It'll also probably mean the warranty was bought out by the vendor, so LG won't service or warranty the line, you can only go back via Sainsbury's, through their repair services, lose any extended peace of mind from a major brand, etc.0

Yeah, basically it's an exclusive (doesn't always mean good) model specific to Sainsbury's, they've done this so that people cannot compare prices to see if it's a good deal or not.
It'll be hard to compare spec because you'll need to be in store reading the box, but (by design or coincidence) your unlikely to get a phone signal in the store and as such no internet access to check the spec against other models.
It also means the typical tech review websites are unlikely to be reviewing one, so any "bells and whistles" removed from it, won't hurt LGs reputation.
Essentially, they're banking on the less technical people being attracted to what they will think is a good deal.
Given the model number difference and lack of information, I would not go near it with a bargepole.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

The final letter after the true model number can also represent things like colour of the unit or accessory differences - cant remember the letters any more for my TV but remember one meant it came with a table stand and the other meant it came with a wall bracket instead.
As others have said, it can also be fudges to make price promises pointless.0

            £399 is a target price.
