Help with car repair/replacement

The worst has happened for my in laws. They were on their way to visit friends and their car has just broken completely. The repairs are too expensive and more than the car is worth. This leaves them with nothing.

We have no money, my wife is a student and my wages go on her and our kids. They have 0 savings. Is there any support mechanism out there that people can recommend? I've been hunting for a solution for them but it's coming up quite dry.

I considered whether we can just sell the husk of car that is left and with car boots etc buy a replacement, by their current Kia is of a good quality and I'm nervous getting them a £500 run around might not be as safe (they drive our kids around a lot plus obviously I care about them too!) I'm sure I'm just worrying needlessly with the quality of run around cars, but is there an alternative?

Any ideas welcome, I'm making a list and I'm going to write out our options and present them to my in laws to try and relieve the stress it's caused.

Well you have landed your post under the noses of the more moneyed individuals in society in this, the Pensions Annuities and Retirement forum on MSE, so who knows, one of the more flush might have maxed out on their £1.25M pension Lifetime allowance and have some spare cash they don't need which your in-laws could use ... but on the other hand, I wouldn't bet on it, but fingers crossed for you!

No, you can copy/paste it in a new appropriate forum.

Exchange it at a Kia dealer for another used car?

Really dont know. I dont know anyone Currently-did when i was younger- that has no savings esp if they are older and had raised children. I had a few friends who had no savings and debt and helped them learn how to get out of it. They are OK now

    Maybe the benefits, Debt forums?

What happened to the car? Did the engine catch fire or something? Were they insured for whatever this incident was?

Could they take the bus instead?

The timing chain wrecked the rest of the engine. Bus is an option for many journeys but not everything can be covered by bus, it's not like London where they go everywhere. They're very rigid.
