Green Deal Home Improvement Fund Con

Options
Hi

Just had an Green deal certificate issued which indicates that I need a new boiler and double glazing. For this work I can claim up to £1250. However, every plumber etc I have called are not approved Green Deal installers. Same story with double glazing companies!

Basically the company who did my assessment are recommending quotes based on their approved installer list which are 30/40% more expensive for quotes that I had received a few weeks ago from non green deal approved installers.

Love the fact that there is government funding available for home improvements but its pretty naff that you actually wont end up saving anything. I dont want the finance option, just the grant.

Anyone else had any issues like me? Its a nightmare and I might go to watchdog.

I have called the Energy Efficient helpline twice and they were pretty useless. They asked me to go to gdorb dot decc dot gov dot uk/installers to find someone in my local area (middlesex) but none are listed. Plus its the worst website around and the search function is just atrocious.

Basically to me, it sounds like the companies who are carrying out the assessments for £100 - 150 are bagging profits!

Feels like a bit of a con.

Any help would be useful please. Thanks

Is the OP hinting that we should all become green deal installers and charge a lot more than everyone else because we use the word GREEN?

It may catch on that. Imagine being charged extra because we mention it being green. Could be a business plan.

  • Sorry what is OP?

Not many green deal installers around. All the reputable plumbers I have found on checkatrade are not approved. Just seems like a small and selected (and expensive) group of installers that we can use. Seems very unfair.

It has something to do with the fact that to be 'approved' costs the plumber a yearly fee, which most have no wish to pay.
