Help - DMP and Barclays threatening letter

Options
Hello everyone. My first post! I've recently taken out a DMP with StepChange to pay off £30,000 of debt, mostly credit cards. Part of my debt is £2500 overdraft from Barclays. I've just received letter from Barclays demanding immediate repayment within 14 days and threatening Debt Collection, court etc. I want to contact them to say I'm attempting to do 'right thing' by taking out DMP, want to pay the debt but can't magic the money out of thin air etc. Am I best to call them (as they suggest - which I am terrified of doing!) or put this in writing to them? Any advice from those with past experience much appreciated. Thank you.

That sounds like a standard default notice that has to be sent by law. The wording although a bit scary is set down in law as well.

So all that has to be mentioned on it, whether they actaully intend to do any of it or not.

It is routine so just let stepchange know.

Yes, you have to remember the majority of these letters are computer generated tripe, which are automatically sent out when the correct payment is not received.

The computer will not know you have entered a DMP, these letters are a legal requirement as fermi says, they wont take into account any arrangement you have with the lender to repay your debt, so dont panic.

Also in answer to your original question, its always best to put everything in writing, so you have a papertrail.

  • Thank you fermi and sour crates :) Relieved that it's not too threatening! I will advise StepChange and send a letter to Barclays so I have a paper trail. Have a good weekend.
