I think I know the answer but am not 100% sure.
Say I want to travel from Waterloo to Seven Sisters and back, am I correct in thinking that it would simply be two single fares, even though there is a change required? Changing lines is part of a fare, isn't it? In so much that you only pay again when you leave a particular station by touching out through the barriers?

Yes it's calculated as one fare regardless of how many changes you need to get from origin to destination. Depending on where you change the fare might be different - you can see how much a particular journey costs on the TfL site single fare finder page.
Even if you leave a station and pass through the gates that doesn't necessarily mean you will be charged again - e.g. if you exited the tube at Waterloo then went through the National Rail gates to travel on to (say) Wimbledon, the system will recognise that and calculate the fare for a through Seven Sisters-Wimbledon journey (£3.90) instead of a Seven Sisters-Waterloo (£2.80) plus a separate Waterloo-Wimbledon (£2.40) fare.0 -

Cool, that makes sense.
Essentially, it will just be Waterloo - seven sisters and back, so zones 1-3, tomorrow, so I make it £5.60 (£2.80 off peak x 2)..0 -

Never knew about this and i have been travelling on tubes everyday from last 4 years0 -
However, if you didn't exit the station and went back to Waterloo and swyped out, you wouldn't be charged anything as the system thinks you didn't leave.0

Remember to use your contactless debit card instead of getting a ticket at the window, as this works out loads cheaper, you get charged the same fee as an Oyster cardholder would.:hello:0

That's incorrect - see this explanation of 'Same Station Exits':

Yes but there is a time limit to obtain this fare. You can't leave too long between swiping out from the tube and touching in on national rail. If you leave it too long. It does actually charge you for two separate fares.
There is a link somewhere that gives the time limit0 -
This link shows the time limits to obtain one single fare rather than two separate fares.

So for example London Victoria, changing between London underground and national rail you get 40mins, but the other way around, arriving by national rail and changing to underground there is a 20 min limit. And between national rail and national rail you get 30 mins0 -

I have an oyster card but was travelling with a couple of people who don't so was particularly pleased to learn that a contactless debit card offers the same discount as an oyster card! However, I was annoyed at myself for leaving my other contactless card at home meaning that one of us had to pay an annoying £9.60!0
