YNAB - Chromebook HP

Can anyone advise, preferably through experience, if they've been able to download YNAB4 to a Chrome book?
Just quickly Googled whilst looking at a Chromebook in PCW I've got my eye on but there seems to be conflicting views out there.
Thanks

  • Thanks AFO.
Very mixed opinions when I tried to search. Will do as you say but feel the answer could be a big fat no!
Shame really as a Chromebook has taken my fancy but I'm only purchasing for finance/internet use so not worth buying if it won't do the job I need it to.

  • Hey firstly, not sure why your going for a chromebook, but each to their own, it is possible to get android apk's to run on chromebooks. so you could download the apk for the android application and run it that way.

I can't post urls due to spam protection but google 'get android apks to work on chromebook'

I believe ynab makes use of some extra libraries, java or flash possibly. Their website suggests it's Windows and MacOS only, which hints it's not a simple java applet, so not a universal application.

I'm concerned about the apk option - you will need another computer to do some things, because currently, the android app doesn't allow full control of the budget, only to add transactions, check balances, etc. (version for iPad does now have full budget editing functionality, suggesting android tablet may get it soon).

Good luck in any case, YNAB has been a great application for me.

    Hi,
No - you can't use YNAB on a Chromebook. I use a Chromebook for most things but have to have my YNAB budget on a laptop.

The YNAB app cannot be used on it's own, it is just an add on to the main YNAB software which has to be downloaded to Windows or MacOS.

  • Thanks for your help everyone.
I'll invest a few more £'s and purchase a 'normal' Windows based laptop.
I'm not very techy and was sort of swayed by the look of some of the Chromebooks. Common sense prevailed as the reason I'm purchasing is solely for YNAB/Mail/Internet usage. Thought I'd better check if Chromebook could do the job - glad I looked for advice!

  • Chromebooks seem to have got more expensive in recent years, a Windows laptop may end up being better value.
  • Hi,
You're welcome! At the current time, YNAB cannot be run on a Chromebook; the desktop version is only compatible with Mac or Windows operating systems.
We’re working in development on something that would resolve this, but we don’t yet have a firm timeline. I am sorry that’s probably not the answer you were hoping for!

Confirmation straight from the horse's mouth (it may help someone with the same query).

You can pick up a reasonable 15" laptop for 250-300 aslong as your not looking to use it for anything too tasking (photoshop/ide's)

You could look at howtogeek dot com/173353/how-to-run-windows-software-on-a-chromebook, although this might be a bit more hassle than it's worth :)

I can't post links, but if you google 'chromebook wine' it should get you there.
