After Ill Health Retirement - NI Contributions

Must have read your reply wrong I didn't realise you had IHR agreed already before you left your employment. That was great. as for NI contributions I am completely in the dark about this. Currently on ESA myself but I had contributions based for the first year, now on income based. Think I need to do a wee bit reading about this.0

Hi Transformers
I realise this is an old thread, but just wondered if you could help me with a bit of knowledge, as you have been through it.
Your post indicates that you didn't leave the NHS until IHER was awarded - is this right?
I have literally just sent my for AW33E form to OH for completion and have an appointment with them next week. My main worry is that I have had very little (amounting to less than 1 week in total) absence within the past 5 years. I drag myself to work no matter how bad I feel, although I know without a doubt that I cannot continue this.
I am hoping to get approved for ill health retirement and then leave, but don't actually know if this is possible. Is this something you did, or were you absent on sick leave, if you don't mind me asking?
I have quite an uncommon condition, diagnosed around 3 years ago, the main symptom of which is overwhelming exhaustion, and the period between arriving in work and exhaustion setting in is getting shorter and shorter. Initially, I could manage to complete my days work, go home, and fall asleep. Now, by the time lunchtime comes I am literally dropping at my desk. I have already cut my days from 4 to 3, and with the help of OH been permitted to stagger my hours, so if I feel more energetic on a Monday, work longer hours then and less on the remaining 2 days. This has not really had any benefit, so I have come to terms with the fact that my only option was to apply for IHER. I have worked for the NHS in an admin position for 30 years, but know I cannot go on.
Look forward to hearing from you.
