Nvq assessor--- vocational

Hello guys. Basically I want to become a instructor/lecturer of Carpentry & Joinery in FE. I am a time served Joinerand have recently completed PTLLS and been advised to do a NVQ Assessors qual to help get me a foot in the door.

Firstly, can any body shed any light on NVQ Assessing? Although I have been advised that it can help greatly if you can instruct and Assess to land a job in College but it also appears that NVQ Assessor is a job on its own. Any info would be great.

Secondly, and probably more important I had a chat with a training advisor today. I am currently in the Army but plan to leave in next year or two. I earn 27k at moment and obviously I want to come out and be secure. But the lady advisor said that the NVQ Assessor is a hell of a lot of work for the amount they earn(which is around 23k a year) plus alot of travelling etc. She then said if I did get into a college then basically I would earn around 22-25k for a long time before I could seak the better money (up to 35k which I have seen on some jobs).
In a nutshell she said I would be better of on Site work earning more.

I totally get that I can earn more on site. But as I said I want security. I know the building trade is going well now but I was in last recession when we were working a month here then two weeks there, had the worry of where the work was coming from, and it did completely stop in the end hence now why I have been a Soldier for 5 years.

I have also heard that Full time contracts in Colleges are hard to come by and that you could end up with little hours.

I was really looking forward to trying to get into instructing whilst making a decent/similar living to what I do now with out running my !!!! off everyday:rotfl:....but I came off phone today feeling deflated and I am properly considering not going a head with this career path.

Can any lovely people share their experience's with me? Or any advice would be fantastic. TIA

I know one who has just been laid off by a college .
Kids coming through education dont want to do trades now, the building college have seen applicants fall to a trickle for building skills, the pay is low, very low and the work is hard and cold, then it's if you can get on a site, which is very hard apparently if you are English believe it or not.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

I hear from the gangs I used to work in that the work is here and houses are going up all over. So I don't worry on that front, I will be fine. However if the kids don't want to learn a trade then thats only a good thing for the tradesmen now as there will be a Skills gap and they will end up being payed more in the end.

Looks like my instructor days are over before they even start

They can place adds now and have a dozen trades men on site in 24 hours from Poland and wider, so the days of hoping for a "skills shortage" wont be happening.
We now live in the EU and like it or lump it it is here to stay, only when the wages start to level off will we see a return to trades as a living.
Some still scratch a living, but it's 1990's pay levels for twice the work these days.
Hence why kids know to avoid it and look for better paid or easier work.

Thanks for that. However your not correct in every thing you say. You forget I have worked in the trade and have regular talk with my mates who are still on tools earning good money.
However there are alot of Poles about, but there was years ago too.

Yes! Well, sort of. I'm an NVQ assessor, I work ft in a college, but my vocational area is business.

Don't want to post tremendous detail in a forum but am happy to answer direct messages to specific questions?

Hi emsywoo123, I have PM you.

    Can any one else help?

Going back to the advisor, she recommended I did NEBOSH courses and went on to site as a health and safety assessor. She also said it was less work and more money!
There is a training provider that comes to my current barracks and provides NEBOSH training.
Again I no NOTHING about NEBOSH....any advice is again very welcome. TIA
