Bradford & Bingley PPI misale?

I have just discovered a file of old documents regarding our Remortgage with B&B in August 1996 thru to July 2005 when we remortaged with Darlington Building Society (and subsequently Paid off in 2011 - hurrah!)

a document from B&B dated 7 August 1996 says "please find enclosed your PPI certificate"... and "As explained when you arranged your mortgage, we believe this insurance to be so important, that we are paying the first 6 months premium on your behalf. At the end of this period your Total Monthly Payments will alter to take account of the PPI" - the upshot was that from Jan 1997 to July 2005 we paid £26.25 pcm additional...

Does anyone think we have a case on the basis of that statement with them effectively bribing us by paying the 1st 6 months for us?

I have ALL documents that cover that period (and even the Financial Advisor's business card)

No. at the end of the free period you would have been written to.

Was the adviser an employee of Darlington?
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

But that would mean you effectively accepted a bribe!

Clearly, too, it was a monthly payment policy and, given that if you had lost your income you would have had to wait nine months to receive state assistance (by which time you would have been to late to save your home) such cover seems a wise precaution.

If you can prove that the policy would never have paid out if you lost your income then you might conceivably have a valid case but otherwise it seems an easy defence.
