If you are doing your own research watch the date of the information. The article you quote here is from October 2012.

Plenty of water under the bridge since then.

Assuming this page for Barclays/Woolwich is up to date, then we'll hopefully be OK with them.

Barclays appeal because they accept cash ISAs as offsetting, which means we can have things "pre-wrapped" for later.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

You may be, but it does not mean they are your best option.

That is sweet. That is a very useful solution especially if there is likelihood of a windfall (eg an inheritance) in later years that could pay off the mortgage. I realise this probably doesn't apply to you (but it could to me! :D).

    'Intermediaries'......

Don't be surprised if the information that you get from branch staff differs, it happens regularly, bit of a 'heads up' for you.

    Well, obviously I disagree. :D

The loan will be repaid either because, 1) daughter qualifies as a Doctor and gets a mortgage in her name, 2) she sells the house, 3) something else.

Lenders run mortgage books from board level at a macro level. Borrowers look at a mortgage from (an overly optimistic) micro level.

If you want personal banking then I would recommend Coutts.

As it happens, I get "personal banking light" from RBS as my (free!) account has as Ts&Cs such that I have a named manager and get their mobile number.

However, their savings and mortgage products suck.

Thanks for that. As it happens, I do spend far too much time quoting organisations' own Ts&Cs to them as is, but a little more won't hurt.

Barclays used to be even better as you could offset other peoples money.

While going through this exercise you might as well borrow more(as much as you can) offset the spare and have this flexible line of credit to juggle your money for as long as you can.

I think you would have fewer potential problem if you were moving or doing some renovation/improvements.
