It's up to the shop's discretion. Where my family live there's a few shops that accept them no problem. However I usually just go to the bank machine here and get English notes.

Despite of your lack of trust of this MSE member, this is an interesting link as they define legal tender as what a court must accept as payment.
  • Hi Homeboy,
Never had much problems using NI notes in Scotland but in parts of England they look at you as if your Al Capone trying to pass them counterfeit funny money. I find that its best when you arrive in GB to use a local bank cash machine and get your notes there. Saves you a lot of hassle.
  • Am I right in saying that all the cash machines at all Halifax and Barclays banks here in NI only issue Bank Of England Notes? I'm pretty sure that's the case.... take some cash out at those before you go to GB...

Or at the international airport - just as you head towards security after check-in - atm there supplies English banknotes
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not.

I thought that too, but the Halifax cash machine in Lisburn gave me Ulster Bank notes!
