Snack boxes

Hi there,

Just looking to get you thoughts on these snack boxes that keep appearing in offices.

As part of my diet I’m looking to be a bit healthier (cutting out those high fats lunches I’ve been prone to having over the past couple of years!).

Not sure whether I should plump for one of those companies or just create my own from home to take to work. The reviews I've read haven't been overly positive.

All I can say is HELP!!

I had Graze for a while a few years back when they included fresh fruit, but it's a bit expensive for me now. It's not always the healthiest either - some of those little mixes are far higher in calories and fat than you'd think.

  • That's what I've thought - the cost could soon mount up. At £3.99 a box (Graze) it would cost £19.95 for my typical working week.

I've also seen that with some of these boxes, it makes it look like you get choice but is a bit of a lottery as to whether you will get the items you want.

why not put together fresh fruit snack boxes no hidden sugars and cheaper than ready made. grapes chunks of melon, pineapple slices of kiwi all of which will keep several days if stored in a fridge so can be made in batches

One of my favourite Slimming World recipes might be suitable for you, especially of you want to put together a few different healthy snacks. Mix a tub of fat free cottage cheese with two eggs. Add any extras you want (lean ham, mushrooms, peppers, onions, mini florets of cooked broccoli, etc). Cook in the oven for about twenty minutes on gas mark 6, until golden brown. If you want to add grated cheese on top, you can do, but cheese has quite a lot of calories. You can cook it as a larger quiche or as smaller ones (baked in a muffin tin). I use silicone bakeware and spray with Frylight first.

It can be kept in the fridge for up to three days.

I also like slices of cold meat to snack on.

Making up a graze style box of your own will be a lot cheaper than buying one, and you can vary the contents according to your likes and dislikes and budget.

I used to work with a collegue who used to order the Graze boxes. I asked her about them because I took the free trial and said I kept ordering for about 2 or 3 weeks (1 a week) before stopping but stopped. She opened a draw and had about 5 past order boxes from them...couldn't stop because she was hooked on the choosing and having this "really cute box" arrive (got to be honest- they're great for holding my makeup and pens and so on- a box per stationary/make up item) but WOW they're so expensive!

I would say the MSE way around this is to make your own; most major supermarkets or Holland and Barratt will sell things you could use- if your in a large town check to see if there is a Whole Foods or Planet Organic near you or an ITSU, they sell similarly useful snack type things. You could then look through Lakeland or a similar place for smaller boxes to store things in.

I know it must sound like a really boring choice but fruit is excellent to snack on- just make sure you buy stuff that is in season and you will find you are more likely to enjoy things a lot more. If you are in able to you can even make your own dried fruit (apples, mangos, strawberries...) just be aware things will shrink a great deal once dried!

They're most definitely an overpriced gimmick. If you can afford it then fair enough, but you're throwing money down the drain.

If you like the look of what colleagues are getting, buy the bits from a supermarket yourself and then make up your own; far cheaper and you know what you're getting so no waste on things you don't like.
